More than for a test…

Before the final afternoon class of the English Refresher course, (while I proctor the students taking the English Exam), I will try to give you a picture (or 7) of what we have been doing the last two weeks. Yesterday afternoon they presented their final projects — a review of the major skills we had worked on during the two weeks of intensive English instruction. Topics covered were verb agreement; pronoun agreement; Call It Courage, the novel we read together; figures of speech; homonyms, synonyms and antonyms; paragraph writing and using verbs correctly. They were on their own to come up with how they would reteach the skill and the method they would use to present it — they had to use a “visual”, (not just lecture, as is customary).

Their presentations were impressive. As you can see, the visuals were quite different and they were very expressive in English. Most of them enjoyed it, which was a very good thing, especially for the women. I won’t go into detail, but the seven women have huge hurdles ahead of them; just being here is one! There were 150 applicants for the 30 spots so they have all jumped that hurdle. I wish I could convey their sacrifice just for the transportation to get here, let alone the big changes in climate and diet for many who come from lower elevations. Anyway, they are all glad to be here — (and as I reread this paragraph, it would never pass on the quiz of topic sentence and controlling idea. Maybe they are teaching me!!!)

Dan and Janet, my friends who are the reason I am here, humanly speaking, arrive tomorrow — I marvel at the Lord’s perfect timing; the class is over and I can go into Hagen with the driver to meet them. I can’t wait to have Janet back — for many more reasons that the meals she will graciously feed me! Please keep praying that my visa will be extended so I can stay until April 30 and go into the Bush as I did the first year I was here.

I will let you know the results of the English exam, but I am very optimistic that they will all do well.

Nice classroom, no?

Can you feel the enthusiasm?

  1. Praying that God will extend your Visa and that your students will do well on their final exams. (No doubt they will, they have an excellent teacher!) So very impressed with all God is doing through you! Love and admire you!

  2. Thank you, Kay! I did really enjoy reading about your teaching and looking at the faces of 8 of your students. Please let me know how they do on their test.

  3. Great pictures and good to hear how everything is going. So happy that Dan and Janet are arriving! Wht a reunion for the three of you. Just having them there has to be wonderful. The food is a bonus. It is snowing here today in Chicago. Just enough (I hope) to over everything is a veil of white. The weather has been very mild so far. Will look forward to hearing from you again soon! It is Sunday morning here.
