Long-awaited arrival

After 15 hours of flying in the daylight to Hong Kong, we had another 7 hours of travel to Port Moresby all at night.  When we arrived about 5:30 POM time and for the rest of the day, both  Janet and I commented on how strange it seemed to have people saying “Good morning” to us — how could it still be morning?

All went as planned, not often possible in PNG, and we were able to get to Hagen right on time, collect all our luggage, be taken to a market for fresh veggies, then to a large grocery store where I spent a small fortune buying necessary things — hopefully for eight weeks!  That also went well since we were the only ones in the van so we didn’t have to hold things on our laps as we have had to do sometimes in the past.

Seven hours after landing in Moresby we were at CLTC.  Our flats were ready and the hostess was waiting for us with huge smiles and flowers on the tables and help in unloading everything.  I spent a bit of time unpacking and eating a little before going to the office to try to get settled there.  Always fun to unpack and see everything again.

I spent Saturday unpacking in both places after sleeping about 10 hours and felt great!  I am so excited to be back here.  This morning (Sunday) was so much fun seeing everyone at church from past years and getting lots of hugs from the ladies.  They are so sweet and many so amazed I have returned, but I always try to give the Lord all the credit — I surely couldn’t be here without His help and strength and wisdom!  Even my back has been fine, amazing considering those long plane rides.  What a wonderful God we serve!

The icing on the cake has been seeing Joe, a former student who is now in the Bachelor’s program.  After his warm greeting, he told me he has been telling the new students to take English and Study Skills very seriously and learn all they can so they can be like him and be back for their third and fourth years!  Sweet!

Classes begin at 9:00 am tomorrow after Faculty devotions at 7:30, but I feel prepared and ready for anything.  Thanks so much for your prayers — they have made all the difference. I say it again — we serve an amazing God!

On our way

(Written on the plane.  We are now HERE!; more on that later!)

On our way!    As I look out the window, I am seeing snow covered mountains.  Not what I expected!  The map tells me we have crossed Alaska and are headed south over Russia.  So when we land, I can say I’ve been to Asia!   Pretty cool!  (over China now).

Thanks to the Hillier’s, I traveled to Embassy Suites Tuesday afternoon to meet Dan and Janet.  Fun to be in a beautiful hotel and enjoy a delicious breakfast.  We were at the airport by 7:45.  Check-in took a little long, and I didn’t know the new DVD player attachment is considered “electronics”, but we had plenty of time.

I love my seat by the window and I can say this is probably the longest day of my life.  On my watch, we left at 10:45 pacific time.  Haven’t changed my watch yet and it is twelve hours later, 11:00 pm, and the sun is strongly shining!  Maybe it will still be out in three hours when we land. (It was!!)

We will be on the ground only long enough to find Air Niugini before we fly another seven hours to the capital of PNG.   Four hot hours on the ground there, then an hour to Hagen.  Planning to do some shopping before the ninety minute ride to CLTC, so should be there early afternoon on Friday (this time).  Thirty some hours.  Hope I sleep tonight.
